There’s no doubt that the foods we eat can impact our skin’s appearance and health. One of the first examples was scurvy, when scientists discovered that a lack of vitamin C led to skin fragility and poor wound healing. Research has also shown that the gut microbiome has an impact on the skin.
For instance, by-products related to naturally occurring “good” bacteria can bind to receptors that inhibit inflammation and stimulate collagen synthesis. On the other hand, “bad” bacteria can promote inflammation and cause a variety of illnesses.
The digestive system actually has a “second” brain, called the enteric nervous system. Comprised of more than 100 million nerve cells that line the gastrointestinal (GI) system from beginning to end, this system processes sensory information in the gut and transmits it to the brain, which then sends signals back to the gut to adjust its function. This interaction plays a role in our emotions, digestion and essential functions such as swallowing, breaking down food via enzyme release, nutrient absorption and elimination.
On the flip side, when the GI system is irritated, it may send signals to the central nervous system to trigger mood changes. Researchers have found that specific bacteria in the GI system can send signals that may affect everything from cognition, skills and memory. Some strains of probiotics have been shown to have positive effects on psychological symptoms of depression, anxiety and perceived stress in healthy human volunteers.
Stress has a far-reaching impact on the body, including skin health. Chronic stress has a cascading effect that prompts the release of neurotransmitters that can cause inflammation, DNA damage, immune system suppression and more — and impair the body’s ability to respond.8, 9 This can be externally reflected in a variety of ways, including skin aging.10 Research has shown that repetitive cycles of stress and inflammation may result in decreased skin-cell function and possibly contribute to chronic skin conditions such as psoriasis and acne as well.
